As other reviewers have noted, he does not go into how we can change our biology, simply referencing some techniques. However, the evidence for this is sketchy and almost all experiments to prove the existence of psi, or other mysterious mind energy or control, have shown that nothing like this exists, or at least we cannot measure it yet. The author goes through a lengthy explanation of cell biology only to end up asserting we can change our gene expression, or biology, though our thoughts. I was not sure where he was going with the book since almost all of it is discussion of cell biology, or at least cell biology as described by Lipton. I was initially intrigued by Lipton's comments, especially his long discourse on how genes and proteins work. By resorting to religious fervor at the end of the book, Lipton completely undermines his credibility as a scientist, and all his material up to that point gets called into question. We have a lot to learn and we may very well discover someday that our thoughts can have a substantial impact on our gene expression, cure us of disease and perform an infinite number of miracles. Some of the other reviewers have done an excellent job of pointing out the problems with Lipton's theory.I agree that we really do not know all that much about the universe, why we are here, how our brains work and so on.
The book is just rambling weird science and I cannot recommend it because it does not do a good job of addressing epigenetics (this is a real area of science) and seems to be the foundation for Lipton's new age philosophy and business. I bought this book on iTunes and only after hitting the "Buy" button did I think to run Lipton through a quack detector. However, about 5 minutes from the end of the audio book, he mentions "Jesus" at least twice in the context of our ability to create miracles, or the "miracles of Jesus', with our mind. I am skeptical and need evidence - Lipton's book provides none. The book is really just a "scientific" argument to lay the groundwork for something else, namely another new age theory of how mind energy can control matter. There is little out there but I did find some discussion on [.]. Also, Lipton's mention of Jesus at the end of the book is incongruous; faith is not science because you cannot observe, measure, prove or disprove mythological beliefs and their consequences. Look elsewhere for learning about epigenetics - this book goes onto the shelf with the new age hucksters.
I'm still in the middle of reading this book and I have to say it is incredibly inspiring. For anyone who is looking for answers, who questions the generell mass acceptance that science is always right, for Spirtual Healers and for all who work in the health sector this book is a must. For anyone who wants to live their life diffently but feels that they are at the mercy of their genes this book is a wake up call.
Essentially Dr. Finally, the book concludes with a two page addendum introducing Rob Williams' energy psychology techniques called PSYCH-K.The PSYCH-K process purportedly utilizes the mind/body interface of muscle testing (kinesiology) to access the self-limiting files of the subconscious mind. Bruce Lipton who, afterall, is a cell biologist and more a commentary on my ignorance on the topic. As a student and practioner of the "soft sciences" (I've been a Rehab Counselor for 10 plus years), this read was a tad heavy on the biology. The subconscious mind plays a crucial role in the change process. Lipton champions the burgeoning field, "engery pyschology", which involves modalities that reprogram previously learned behaviors to suppress self-destructive or self-defeating behavior.
The immense power of the subconscious mind and the findings of quantum physics that connect energy and thought are discussed.
Lipton concludes "genes are not our destiny" and states that environmental influences, including nutrition, stress, and emotions, can modify those genes without changing their basic blueprint.
Lipton, "It (PSYCH-K) also makes use of the left brain/right brain integration techniques to effect swift and long-lasting changes".
Of course, that is less a criticism of Dr.
As written by Dr.
He references the revolutionary field in biology called "epigenics", which literally means "control above our genes".
This discipline submits that molecular biology has shown that the genome is far more fluid and responsive to the envinroment than previously supposed.
What I appreciated most about this book is Lipton's disagreement that that willpower and positive thinking (conscious mind) alone will eliminate those barriers existing in the subconscious.
I look forward to learning more about PSYCH-K.
REALASYFantality or, say Realasy,Though something shy of proof and not yet truth,A "pseudo-science" or a "fallacy"In scientific circles still uncouth, May yet appeal to our imaginationAnd give us something useful to believeAffording us pragmythic inspirationThen yielding us a dream to which we'll cleave.Such is the course of all new theories hatchedBy genius, destined finally to shiftSome paradigm to which we're now attachedAnd grant humanity its next uplift. Though some now dub it "fiction," "superstition," The best of it will prove sound intuition.
I'll make this review short and sweet. This book will entertain and amaze you with the stories of what is possible and how science is beginning to discover (or at least theorize) what's behind this "magic." But it won't tell you how to participate in these miracles. So it may leave you feeling like you are watching the Superbowl from outside the stadium gate with no ticket to get in.But the hope and wonder you get from reading it is definitely worth the price. I recommend it.I was hoping his next book, Spontaneous Evolution, would dive into whole "what you can do to change your life" part of it, but based on the description, it doesn't look like it.
